Mag's Customs & Mods - McFarlane DC Rogue Knight Batman

Mon Feb 01, 2021 12:28 am

So either because of the snap or pruning due to my inactivity or robo having it out for me my old thread has disappeared. There wasn't alot of activity there anyway so i'll start fresh since i actually did a new custom. My usual one per year full custom, and i am stretching the limits of the term "full" when i say that.

GI Joe - Shockwave

Simply put this one was making use of a useless figure. I got the black suit video game cap to build joe fixit and saw some potential for a joe figure in him and went from there. After some research through the old filecards to find someone who fit the bill of a tactical geared character like this i landed on Shockwave, the SWAT specialist.

Basic breakdown:
head - old fantomex
body - video game cap
backpack - mcf fortnite guy whos name i don't remember
hat - gi joe gung ho (big thanks to TFitz for hooking me up with that)
guns and other bits are fodder bin specials, plan b stuff for the pistol/holster and swat shield. Uzi is from neca harley quinn, with a silencer and stock added, chest knife from neca movie shredder. Big knife on the pack to replicate the old figure design.

This was minimal work to the figure, dremelled the star off the chest and glued on some pouches, head swap, and then base coat black over the grey areas, then blue drybrush for the uniform, grey drybrush on alot of the armor and blacks. I didn't due the bright blue with dark blue camo bars like the original figure for, obvious lazy reasons. This is a modern take like all classified figures and he fits well for my collection.

Thanks for looking, i may try to get around to adding some of my recent real customs or modded figures to this thread later.

I dig it. That Cap is a great figure, just not of Cap. This is as good a use for it as any. I turned mine into SHIELD agents with the fully masked heads from the Nick Fury figures. Shockwave is still pretty recognizable a Joe too. He fits great with the other Classified figures.

Thanks Norm.

Had some more time and was messing around with some figures and after seeing a wip on instagram using the sky tyrant body for a possible scarecrow i decided to try and come up with my own.

Scarecrow

Basically, sky tyrant body, shaved down some of the details in front and added a wrap made out of the skirt from the old neca kratos. Head is mattel multiverse movie scarecrow with an old movie cowboy ghost rider hat. Bag is from wraarl i just thought it added something to him, with the worm being whatever, just something scary. Scythe from metal batman. He has a couple different shades of brown/grey brown drybrushing and some gold/bronzeish accents, but its hard to photograph but its a scarecrow that fits my mcfarlane display.

McFarlane DC has me really back into customizing so we will keep the train rolling with the next entry.

Hawkman

I picked up the new mcfarlane mortal kombat shao khan on a whim cause it looked cool, but i don't collect MK figures so after messing around a bit i decided it could make an interesting hawkman. This is obviously a very different interpretation, i see it more as an actual alien version, from thangar, but not just a human with wings but rather a humanoid alien with wings and other features. The shao khan figure has nicely sculpted scales and spikes along with claws and such that to me lent themselves to an avian style body design and along with the intricate armor leaning towards some of hawkmans past looks i felt it all worked together.

There's very little added to the base figure, wings from sky tyrant plugged into holes i drilled into the back. Then the chest circle is also from sky tyrant just glued on with an extra strap for good measure. The mace comes from the turner dcd hawkman, along with the beak and head wings. The beak and wings were mated to the mk helmet with its large horns and teeth removed and then alot of paint. Mcfarlanes current style of figures still maxamize the sculpting like he did in the past but the added articulation has detracted from paint apps and the orignal figure was very bland so just some reds on the armor bits to tie things together and detail paints on the body to bring out the sculpt and separate some things.

Here's a wip:

Thanks guys, I fell off for a bit there but I'm back with a quick and easy one.

Superman

Image

Just the infected superman with the head, hand pegs, and cape from red son. Painted the blues and then skin tone to match. Only some minor dremel work to adapt the hand pegs to this body and hands and to slim down the neck for better fit and rom on the head.

Sorry for the pics but I didn't have the time or energy to do a better setup, like I said this one was just quick and easy.

That Hawkman is the best I have ever seen. That Shao Kahn figure worked great as a base.

Re: Mag's Customs & Mods - McFarlane DC Lex Luthor (Power Armor)

Mon Jun 28, 2021 6:05 pm

Another mcfarlane DC custom, these are really my thing lately. I started this prior to the latest leak list showing a possible lex coming, so obviously my luck i make something and the manufacturer has to one up me but i went ahead and finished it and we will see.

Lex Luthor

This began obviously with unchained superman. I bought the figure on a whim cause it was on sale but i had no attachment to it as superman, it was just a neat figure. I decided to try and make lex despite the obvious challenge in design and paint after i tried a few head and landed on the DST thor. Removed the wings, shoulder pads, and emblem from superman, and did my best to sculpt the armor design on the torso.

After much tweaking and sanding and fiddling and annoyance with trying to create symmetrical and clean sculpt and not really being happy i almost gave up. Then i realized that i could just go hard into a "battle damaged" look and tweak my sculpting and then do some work on the rest of the figure to try and blend it a bit. So alot of scratching, gouging and dremel attacks, then just paint. Based black, then silver drybrush, then metallic green and purples, and chrome pen for scratch and dent detailing. Head is as i said, thor from DST with hair removed, ears added and head smoothed over, its not perfect but again im terrible with symmetrical sculpting so bleh whatever.

Thanks guys, yes lex's head is a marvel select Thor.

Batman

Tried and tried to mod the ac1000 batman to something I preferred but I was never happy. Then I started trying to kitbash it with parts from another figure but that resulted in a final piece I kinda hated so I started from scratch.

I took advantage of dorksides sale to get the guitar death metal bats and unmasked Thomas Wayne just to kitbash this figure. I'd been eyeballing the parts and mcfarlanes easy to pop and swap figures made this pretty simple to start.

Things changed when I realized I hated Thomas' gauntlets so I reused the ac1000 ones, even though they look plain compared to his armored boots. I'm aware the torso features texture but it's less obvious in person and I don't care I loved the sculpt and didn't want to use the stubbier torso from Thomas and I like this logo better.

The cape and cowl came last as I wasn't happy with any rubber ones, death metal torso has an actual separate neck piece that makes a cowl base on its own so with some prying and patience i popped it apart and trimmed the insides, set the cloth cape in place and reglued the neck piece down after i filled the holes where the jacket plugged in.

Basic breakdown is arms and lower half are Thomas, with feet, torso, and head from death metal and forearms, hands from ac1000 and a cloth cape.

Very little paint just some grey to blend the two figures as they are a slightly different shade and and blacks for touch up. Only sculpting was to fill holes and trenches from death metal jacket and Thomas' thigh belts.

Final result can seem a little lanky. The torso is long but I think it works ok. He's taller than flash and others which I want, superman is still short but I keep him on a flight stand so it's OK.

Now that I've made this todd can make an ultimate modern batman to make this effort pointless like usual.

This was a product of left over parts from my previous Batman custom. Trying to come up with something to kitbash out of the thomas wayne torso and head and the lower half and arms from metal batman. After getting king shazam to tinker with and taking off his cape and collar i saw something i really liked about it making the other parts a more medieval time style batman.

I wanted to keep the unmasked head and eventually found a hood that worked for the look wanted, its cloth from hasbro kylo ren but its pattern is close enough to the shazam cape it works for me. The chest emblem comes from the old kingdom come armored batman, and lower tunic comes from a LCBH wraarl. I made the sword out of an old ring wraith sword and a batarang, then just some paintwork. This is a pure kitbash custom, no sculpting, just alot of cutting glueing and paintwork.
