First Look – DC Universe Classics Color of Fear 2-pack

We are all about doing things out of order around here. Last week we brought you a First Look at the DC Universe Classics Justice in the Jungle two-pack that will be hitting Matty Collector this December. Well, now we are working backwards and have a First Look November’s Color of Fear set. Featuring key Sinestro Corps members Karu-Sil and Romat-Ru, this set shows that Mattel might have potential for some color exclusive sets.
While the Justice in the Jungle set is the brainchild of Mattel designer Bill Benecke, it would be unfair for him to have all the fun! The Color of Fear set is brought to us by Scott Neitlich (aka Toy Guru) and man, this could get addicting.
The Green Lantern corner of the DC Universe is getting a major push this year, in print and in toys. While Blackest Night rages on in a universe-wide event in the comics, Mattel is showing us some love under various lights with a slew of upcoming Lantern releases. In DCUC series 11 we will be getting Green Lanterns John Stewart, Katma Tui and Kilowog, along with Cyborg Superman in his Sinestro Corps duds. Just so he and Sinestro don’t get lonely we are also getting this great set featuring fearful standbys Karu-Sil and Romat-Ru.
I think this is a great set and the figures are really well done, but I am even more excited because I would really like to see this execution done across the entire Lantern color spectrum in upcoming releases. We could have Saint Walker (just a Deadman body away) and Warth, Star Sapphires Carol Ferris and Fatality, Red Lanterns Atrocitus and Vice (with a Dex-Star pack in), Larfleeze, Indigo, Black Hand, the list goes on and on! The Sinestro Corps is a good place to start though and this set does not disappoint.
Out of the two, I think Karu-Sil is my favorite. She is mostly the Harley Quinn body and makes the best use of it so far – since she is a teenager the physiology is prefect for her. The new parts are all very detailed, even under her hair that comes down over her face there is some great scar tissue sculpting, leave it to the Horsemen! The collar is a separate piece so it looks like it is “flowing”, just like in the comics and her wrist gauntlets are all new as well.
She comes with the sets only accessory and it is a doozy. As you may or may not know, Karu-Sil was brought up feral and had three dog-like companions until one day Green Lantern Blish comes along and kills them and puts her in an institution. Well, fast forward and she is recruited by Sinestro into his Corps and now the only constructs she creates are facsimiles of the pack that raised her calling them her “fathers three”. In the set we get one of them and the detail on it is everything you would expect from the Horsemen. One thing I did not expect – the dog does have a cut neck so there is a point of articulation there. I really dig the translucent yellow plastic they used and luckily the construct inclusion will continue with the Lanterns in series 11. Of course, it would have been cool to get three dogs, but as you can imagine, it did not cost out. So, you will have to pick up three sets or find a talented caster.
Her companion in the set is the aforementioned Romat-Ru. He is, of course, the Sinestro Corps Xudarian member, the same planet from which the GL Tomar-Re hails. While not much is known about him from a character standpoint, he is considered one of the vilest creatures in the galaxy – perfect for the Sinestro Corps. After getting Romat here, I really want Tomar too, er Tomar-Re also, Tomar-Tu is a completely different character.
For construction is mostly the skinnier Black Manta body, but he has a new lower torso piece to accommodate his belt. This also adds some height to him, good for variety. His head sculpt is very detailed and looks just like the Sinestro Corps promo poster that came out awhile back.
Overall, I think this is a great set, especially to fill out some of Sinestro’s ranks. Hopefully Mattel will go back to the well for each Lantern Corps in the future so we can have a real War of Light play out on the shelves.
*Thanks for reading and thanks to Toy Guru for sending this along and for coming up with the idea behind this set. Hopefully we will see more like in the future!

Apologies for Sinestro not being pictured, I am in the middle of a move and he is in a box. I will have more pictures soon.
