We are getting close. SDCC will be in full swing by this time next week and we will know all of the secrets Matty will spill at the Mattel/DC panel. For now, we have a pre-Comic Con treat – your First Look at GLEEK and his pals Zan and Jayna. Check it out!
First, let’s just get this out of the way, only those attending SDCC next week will be able to get their grubby mitts on the little blue Wonder Monkey featured here. Like it or love it, Gleek is now a part of DC Universe Classics. So, if you want him, head out to San Diego, make a friend that is going or brave eBay to get one because he will not be offered as part of the Wonder Twins set that will be available at www.mattycollector.com on August 3rd.
Let me just say this: I am NOT a mint on card collector. Never have been, never will be. However, if anything was going to get me to keep something on card, it is this set. Mattel pulled out all of the stops (as shown on their Face Book video) the layout, effects design of this set are all really cool. Oh, and Gleek himself comes in a little poly bag, just as promised.
The figures of Zan and Jayna are pretty much reuse from previous blank bucks, which is fine as they are spandex-clad. I kinda wish that there was already a skinnier make base body for Zan as he is a little buff, but he is okay as is. All of the new parts (mostly the heads) are very well done, as if there was any doubt from Four Horsemen sculpts, and their faces balance old time cheese with a touch of crazy, just like they were in the old Super Friends cartoon. Great quality too, so hopefully there won’t be many cases of paint imperfections or breakage.
Gleek himself is all new and has a great sculpt, especially his little oven mitt-esque booties.
The accessories are a lot of fun, and I am especially partial to the Zan as water in bucket piece, it is very well executed. Jayna in eagle form is great too and offers a pleasant surprise- the wings are articulated! Also, the talons are sculpted to be able to sit on the handle of the bucket, another nice touch. Looking at the latter, I can’t help but Wonder (get it?) that I might be holding a future Masters of the Universe Classics Zoar in my hands. Hmm… could be.
Love them or hate them, the Wonder Twins have arrived in DCUC and Gleek is included as a “gift” for those attending the Con. I do feel for those not able to make it out, but this really is a fun set, and that is coming from someone not especially partial to the characters.
So, if you are headed to SD next week, be sure to pick this up. If not, you might have your work cut out for you if you want to add Gleek to your shelf. Thanks for looking and see you at the Con!
